Selah
The word "Selah" occurs 71 times in the book of Psalms,
usually at the end of a psalm or a passage in it.
Selah
is thought to mean to lift up or to exalt. Some say it means 'forever',
Others say that since it is the notation at the close of a thought,
it directs one to reflect on the enduring significance of the passage before.
It has also been assumed to mean a technical musical term that
shows accentuation, pause or interruption since the Psalms
were the hymn-book of Israel. Selah does connect the end of one Psalm
with the beginning of the next, uniting the two Psalms.
Selah does more than connect the passages,
however. It connects subject matter, not just the music. It connects truths
not just the tune.
It's a thought link which
bids us to look back at what has been said and make the connection with what
is to follow. If is is derived from 'salah' which means to pause then we are
to pause in our hearts and note the connection of precious truths.
If is is derived from 'selal' which means to 'lift up' then we should lift up
our hearts and consider the two truths which are joined.
We
know it marks a pause in the music of the Psalms. By doing so, it
gives the us an opportunity to reflect in our hearts and mind on the
splendor and glory of God.
May all who stay here be Blessed.
